The Many Facets of Alopecia
December 9th, 2024
Let’s talk the hair biggie. Alopecia (or hair loss, in laymen’s terms) is an autoimmune condition that results in partial or complete hair loss and affects an average of 2% of people worldwide. On the surface that number sounds relatively small, but it actually means 1 in 50 people suffer from alopecia, which is quite a high number. Alopecia affects people of all races, genders, and ages equally, and while onset is generally experienced between the teenage years and age thirty, it can hit at any age. Rebecca Jordan, the radiant woman pictured here has Alopecia and chose a Luxe lace front 14” piece in gorgeous caramel tones as the way to get her hair back when she experienced Alopecia.
Alopecia is a vastly varied condition in the way it manifests. Some people experience overall hair thinning, some lose their hair in patches or spots, some in a ring around the back and sides of the head, and some lose all their hair completely. While one can microblade or draw in eyebrows, the same techniques won’t work to bring back the full head of hair one may be missing. And even if it’s “only” partially gone- a few coin shaped bald spots or a third of a once luxurious head of hair gone, it’s hard to keep going and pretend one doesn’t notice the missing strands.
In terms of when alopecia hits, let’s be real—there’s no good age to be balding. It’s isolating and difficult no matter how old you are. Whether you’re in the midst of those very vulnerable teenage years when you feel like everyone’s eyes are on you no matter what or are already well into adulthood when you’re somehow not supposed to care what anyone thinks, it’s hard to feel confident enough to decide no one’s looking when a feature of yourself you’ve probably taken for granted has shifted or altogether vanished. And whether it’s a regular sweatpants and hoodie day or you’re dressing up for a special occasion, it’s hard to pretend your “look” is complete without a head of hair to top it with (unless that’s your choice, in which case more power to you).
No matter why someone is interested in purchasing a wig while experiencing hair loss, we believe that everyone deserves to feel both beautiful and comfortable. That’s one of the reasons we have a variety of options to choose from when it comes to finding the perfect hairpiece. While everyone’s mind generally jumps to a full wig to deal with hair loss or thinning, there are other choices for those experiencing partial loss. A wig topper is ideal in a situation like that. As a partial wig, it’s designed to cover areas on the top and sides of the head that are experiencing balding or thinning and as such can be blended with the client’s own hair for a seamless look. We pride ourselves on both our color and texture matching to ensure that from every angle the client appears to be rocking a lush mane of their own. Lightweight and easy to wear, it’s an ideal option for those who aren’t in need of a full wig.
Of course, wigs are our jam, and if you’re in the market for a full hairpiece we’ll be with you every step of the way. No one deserves to feel uncomfortable about the way they look, and from elementary school kids who just want a ponytail to bounce around behind them like they used to have, to hiking enthusiasts looking for a practical braided style, to mature adults looking for a sleek, chic, and practical bob, anything is possible. We know that no matter how much or how little hair you have, you remain the same on the inside. And if you want to remind the world of that too with a brand new ’do, we’re here to help.
